Sedation Dentistry in Brea, CA
Sedation Dentistry Provides Relief from Dental Anxiety
If you are undergoing extensive dental work or experience a high level of dental anxiety, we may recommend sedation dentistry as part of your treatment plan. We work with an anesthesiologist who comes to our office to perform intravenous conscious sedation (IV sedation) for a high level of relaxation. We also offer nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation.
Patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety benefit most from IV sedation. We administer sedatives intravenously so you feel extremely relaxed and sleepy. You are monitored by an anesthesiologist the entire time. Most patients experience amnesia so it is very likely that you will not remember much, if anything, from your visit.
Patients with mild to moderate dental anxiety can feel relaxed and calm with an oral sedative*. We may prescribe anti-anxiety medication that you will take about an hour before your visit. Someone will drive you to and from the office because you will feel fairly drowsy and relaxed. Oral sedation can be beneficial to those who feel anxious about sitting in the dental chair and for those who fear going to the dentist.
*Someone must drive you to and from your appointment.
We recommend nitrous oxide to many patients who feel anxious or are concerned about pain. Nitrous oxide gas, otherwise known as laughing gas, can help you feel relaxed within a matter of minutes. We control how much gas you inhale and you will return to normal shortly after the gas is stopped and you breathe oxygen for a few minutes. If you are undergoing tooth extractions, fillings or some of our more involved dental treatments, nitrous oxide may be a part of your treatment plan.
